The sound installation SHARE was formed by a double spiral maze made from bush and tree twigs (hazelnut, alder, fir, cembra pine) that have been cut by forestry workers as their annual rite and then densely planted in an upright position into the soil by young Poschiavo helpers and myself. You could walk the double spiral maze and hear simultaneously different animal voices from 8 CD players hidden between the twigs. The unmistakable expressions, the chants and songs, the rhythms of animal communication and music... You were taken by surprise!
I propose the same concept for an indoor space - this time taking advantage of urban litter behavior and building the double spiral maze from (washed) plastic fast food waste like bottles, plates, cups, knives, forks and spoons of different shape, size and color. The items will be piled high to form walls and might be fixed on the ceiling - so the spirals are actually growing hanging from above. 6 - 8 CD players are integrated and play an unexpected mix of animal voices. The double spiral maze will use up all available space of one or more rooms.
Walk the maze, gaze through the dangling white plastic eating tools and hear the variety of musical expressions in sound and space.
A large long double spiral is made from growing trees, bushes, flowers, herbs, as a paradise of forms, colors, sent. The double spiral path is stones, pebbles, sand, soil. Water is running across the maze as a mountain creek.
The plants of the spiral are under total protection and cannot be harvested, picked, ported, cut, felled. Over time the plants will spread and take some of the path, overgrowing each other and new species will immigrate. The path can only be maintained by regular use of the public. After decades the double spiral path might disappear and plants and animals will take over.
Die Klanginstallation SHARE bestand aus einer Doppelspirale aus Busch- und Baumzweigen (Haselnuss, Erle, Tanne, Arve), die von Forstarbeitern in ihrem jährlichen Frühlingsritual abgeschnitten und dann in einer aufrechten Position eng aneinander im Boden gepflanzt wurden durch junge Helfer und mich. Man konnte sich im Irrgarten der Doppelspirale bewegen und simultan verschiedene Tierstimmen hören, die aus acht, zwischen den Zweigen versteckten CD Playern drangen. Der unverwechselbare Ausdruck, die Gesänge und Lieder, der Rhythmus der Kommunikation der Tiere und ihre Musik... überraschten!
Ich schlage dasselbe Konzept für einen Innenraum vor – diesmal wird das urbane Abfallverhalten ausgenutzt und eine Doppelspirale mit (gewaschenem) Plastik Fast Food Müll wie Flaschen, Teller, Tassen, Gläser, Messer, Gabeln und Löffel verschiedener Form, Farbe und Grösse konstruiert. Die Teile werden hoch gestapelt, damit sie Wände bilden, die vielleicht auch an der Decke fixiert werden könnten – die Spiralen würden dann hängend von oben herunter wachsen. 6 – 8 CD Player werden darin integriert und spielen einen unerwarteten Tierstimmen Mix. Der Irrgarten der Doppelspirale wird den gesamten vorhandenen Raum oder sogar mehrere Räume ausfüllen.
Durch den Irrgarten schlendern, zwischen dem baumelnden Plastik Geschirr hindurchspähen und die Vielfalt des musikalischen Ausdrucks in Klang und Raum wahrnehmen.
Eine grosse, extensive Doppelspirale wird durch das Pflanzen von wachsenden Bäumen, Büschen, Blumen, Kräutern als Paradies der Formen, Farben, Düfte gebaut. Der Weg innerhalb der Doppelspirale besteht aus Stein, Kies, Sand, Erdboden. Wasser fliesst durch den Irrgarten als Bergbach.
Die Pflanzen der Doppelspirale sind absolut geschützt und dürfen nicht geerntet, gepflückt, beschnitten, abgeschnitten, gefällt werden. Mit der Zeit werden sich die Pflanzen ausbreiten, einen Teil des Weges in Anspruch nehmen, einander überwuchern und neue Arten werden sich ansiedeln. Der Weg kann nur durch das regelmässige Begehen der Besucher erhalten werden. Nach Jahrzehnten könnte der Doppelspiralenweg verschwinden und Pflanzen und Tiere würden dann davon Besitz ergreifen.
L’istallazione sonora SHARE era costruita come una doppia spirale con rami di cespugli e alberi (nocciola, ontano, abete, pino cembro) che erano tagliati dalle guardie forestali nel loro rito primaverile, e poi piantati in posizione diritta in poca distanza nel suolo dai giovani aiuti e da me stessa. Si poteva girare nel labirinto della doppia spirale e sentire contemporaneamente diverse voci d’animali che venivano da otto lettori CD nascosti nei rami. L’espressione inconfondibile, i canti e brani, il ritmo della comunicazione animale e la loro musica… sorprendevano!
Propongo lo stesso concetto per uno spazio interno – questa volta sfruttando il comportamento attuale nei confronti dell’immondizia e cosi costruendo una doppia spirale con rifiuti di plastica “usa e getta” (lavati) come bottiglie, piatti, tazze, bicchieri e posate di varie forme, colori e grandezze. Gli attrezzi sono accatastati verticalmente per ottenere delle pareti che potrebbero essere fissate anche al soffitto – in questo caso le spirali scenderebbero pendenti dall’alto in basso. 6 – 8 lettori CD sono integrati nella struttura e suonano un mix di voci animali inaspettato. Il labirinto della doppia spirale riempie tutto lo spazio esistente di una oppure di più stanze.
Passeggiare nel labirinto, guardare attraverso gli attrezzi di plastica pendenti e sentire la diversità dell’espressione musicale come suono e spazio.
Una grande e vasta doppia spirale è costruita piantando degli alberi, cespugli, fiori, erbe crescenti come paradiso di forme, colori, odori. Il sentiero nella doppia spirale è fatto di pietra, ghiaia, sabbia e terra. Acqua scorre attraverso il labirinto come un ruscello di montagna.
Le piante della doppia spirale sono protette totalmente e non possono essere raccolte, spiccate, portate, tagliate, abbattute. Col tempo le piante si estendano, coprano parzialmente il sentiero e loro stesse, e nuove specie si insediano. Il sentiero può essere solamente mantenuto tramite l’uso regolare da parte della gente. Dopo decenni d’anni, il sentiero della doppia spirale potrebbe scomparire e le piante e gli animali potrebbero prendere possesso di questo nuovo ambiente.
